Affordable AI for Small Firm Lawyers

July 30, 2019

Last week, we had lunch with our friend and colleague, Lance Johnson, of Johnson Legal PLLC. He told us about an affordable Westlaw offering that uses artificial intelligence to analyze briefs. Rather than screw up the explanation, I asked Lance to give me a couple of paragraphs describing it. Thanks for sharing Lance.

Westlaw now has an AI brief analysis tool that leverages AI to help level the playing field for small and solo firms. They call it QUICK CHECK. Since the Virginia state courts now have Westlaw and this tool, it wasn’t hard to imagine that the clerks would be analyzing my brief to look for weak or overruled cites, quotes that are not quite right, and controlling authorities I might have missed. The same analysis could be done on opposing counsel briefs and, I imagine, a reported case whose rationale I would like to distinguish.

As I understand it, the Quick Check system will accept Word or PDF documents for analysis. The results will highlight invalidated, overturned, and effectively abrogated cases. I could probably find out the same information given enough time, but that would take time and increase the cost to my clients. Competitors who do the same job for less money would have an advantage. The integration with the Westlaw search system then lets me update the key cases seamlessly.

This Quick Check system also automatically analyzes your search results, flagging cases that come back from a search so you can see how good the foundation is for the decision while you are reviewing cases. Yup, I’m a believer that AI can work for me.
