An Expensive Option: Microsoft Copilot

July 19, 2023

It’s no secret that Microsoft is heavily invested in artificial intelligence. Just look at the billions of dollars committed to OpenAI. The latest buzz revolves around the release of Copilot, Microsoft’s AI-powered technology for Office documents as reported in a Verge post. The big buzz is about the cost of Copilot, which isn’t cheap. Copilot is a hefty $30/month option for subscribers of Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Standard and Business Premium. Those thirty bucks are in addition to the normal monthly 365 subscription fee. Copilot is not an option for Microsoft 365 Business Basic or any of the home plans.

There is no release date for Copilot yet, but it’s a rocky start with the price announcement. For those that may not know, Copilot is Microsoft’s AI implementation intended to “instantly summarize documents, generate emails, and speed up Excel analysis.” Copilot will also be added to Teams.

We’ll have to see how widely Copilot is adopted by subscribers, but I’m guessing the price will put off a lot of users. The $30 price point means your monthly cost could increase by two to three times.
