Celebrating Thirty Years of Solitaire

May 26, 2020

Using playing cards are one thing, but those of a certain age have enjoyed playing solitaire in a Windows environment for thirty years. As Paul Thurott stated in a blog post, "With a worldwide appeal, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, as it is known today, hosts over 35 million players each month, from more than 200 countries and territories, [and] in 65 different languages." Microsoft's Paul Jensen writes, "And after 30 years, Microsoft Solitaire is still one of the most played games on the planet every day, with more than 100 million hands played daily around the globe."

Solitaire first appeared in Windows 3.0 back in 1990. Over the years, some versions of Windows didn't install Solitaire by default. Leave it to users to figure out how to make sure there was a Solitaire icon available to launch the time-honored game. While some may say that Solitaire negatively impacts productivity, others tout the experience of improving drag and drop while using a mouse.
