End-To-End Encryption Now Available for iCloud Backups
December 8, 2022
As we have said many times, encryption is your friend. If you don’t care about your privacy, read no further. If you do, then you should be encrypting as much of your information as possible. That includes encrypting any data stored by a third party and any data transmission. The Verge reported that Apple has taken another step to help you protect your data. Users can now enable end-to-end encryption for their iCloud backups using Advanced Data Protection. In order to take advantage of end-to-end iCloud backup protection, you need to be running iOS 16.2, which is currently in beta.
Apple will not be able to access your data if you enable Advanced Data Protection, so it is important that you take steps to protect you from yourself. This means you’ll need to set up account recovery. Go to Settings -> iCloud -> Advanced Data Protection. Make sure you set up a recovery contact and/or a recovery key.
