Firefox Update Keeps Ad-blockers Working

January 18, 2023

At the end of 2020, Google rolled out a platform for extensions in Chrome called Manifest V3. The goal was to make extensions less resource intensive and more secure. The change replaced some APIs and caused problems for ad-blockers such as uBlock Origin. According to a post on The Verge, the recently released Firefox 109 update includes its version of Manifest V3 that allows ad-blockers to continue to operate. As the post states, “…the high-level takeaway is that Mozilla’s version of Manifest V3 keeps the feature Google removed, while adding support for the more limited replacement as well.”

This approach does leave some security risks in place. Besides always having to balance security versus convenience, the browser wars have highlighted the need to balance privacy over security. No matter what browser you use, make sure you apply the updates and are running the latest version available.
