Google Chrome Update Brings Privacy and Security Improvements

May 20, 2020

Google has released the latest update (Chrome 83) for its Chrome browser. One of the most talked about updates is support for DoH (DNS over HTTPS). When you surf the internet, DNS "translates" the web address to an IP address. Prior to DoH, these DNS requests are in clear text. DoH encrypts the traffic so the ISPs and websites won't know your internet surfing habits. The Verge has a post that details the various updates included in Chrome 83.

Besides DoH, Chrome 83 supports blocking third-party cookies while in incognito mode. Users will notice that Google has changed button locations and made several settings more prevalent. As The Verge states, "Cookie settings, privacy settings, extensions, and Google sync settings are all becoming more prominent and will get better and clearer descriptive labels."

Chrome will update automatically over the next several weeks, but it is easy to update now. Just click on the three dots icon in the upper right corner. Select Help and then About Google Chrome. The update will automatically download if you are not already running Chrome 83.
