Google Forcing Implementation of 2FA

October 6, 2021

Why is there so much resistance to using a second factor for logon? Perhaps users feel they can’t afford to take the extra 8 seconds of their life to periodically enter a code or approve an authorization notification. Well, Google is about to make that decision for you. Back in May, Google announced it would begin enrolling users in 2FA by default. That day is almost upon us. The Verge reported that Google will enforce 2FA for more than 150 million accounts by the end of 2021.

Two million YouTube creators will also be required to have 2FA configured. If you run the Security Checkup on your account, you can verify whether 2FA is configured. Google offers a variety of 2FA methods. I recommend you use an authenticator app as your 2FA method and NOT get codes via SMS text messaging. Better yet, use a hardware key such as a YubiKey or Google’s own Titan Security Key.
