How Long is a “Lifetime” Subscription?

October 21, 2021

It is getting harder and harder to find a technology service that is not subscription based. Typical subscriptions require an annual commitment Monthly subscriptions push the cost up a little bit more, but may be a better alternative. Some services even offer a lifetime subscription. How-To Geek has advice as to the fine print revolving around these lifetime subscriptions. We know users don’t read the terms of service and they don’t read what it means to purchase a lifetime subscription.

Is “lifetime” just for the current version? In other words, do you get updates for version 1.0 and not when version 2.0 is released? Lifetime isn’t very helpful if the company goes out of business. It is not very helpful if the product doesn’t get updated. At some point, the software and/or service will not work on your latest computer and operating system. You may just abandon the product, meaning you paid for something you will no longer use.

At the end of the day, make sure you understand the definition of “lifetime” before you pony up your money.
