How to Improve Security of Ring Cameras

December 12, 2019

Ring (owned by Amazon) originally hit the market with video doorbells and now has a large choice of security devices. Besides video doorbells, there are indoor cameras, security lights, alarm systems, etc. It's pretty convenient to answer your door and talk to whoever is there while you are not at home. In order to facilitate the feature, the doorbell needs to be connected to the internet. In other words, it's a IoT device. Vice has reported that hackers are now attacking Ring devices. A hacker got into a Ring camera installed in the bedroom of three young girls in DeSoto County, Mississippi. The hacker played the song "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" and announced "I'm your best friend. I'm Santa Clause."

Apparently, unauthorized access was gained because of a weak password on the Ring account and the failure to enable two-factor authentication. Whether you have a IoT device or not, you should always have a strong password and enable two-factor authentication for all accounts. If you have a Ring device, two-factor authentication is enabled within the app. I wouldn't add Shared Users or even post any information to the Neighborhood feature of the app either.
