Is Apple Changing Device Connections?

April 30, 2019

Apple has “standardized” on the Lightning connector for a very, very long time. Shocker, but the rest of the world isn’t keen on paying licensing fees or propagating Apple’s connector. Instead, we are seeing more and more manufacturers moving towards the very flexible USB-C connector, which I have already blogged about. In fact, Apple’s new iPad Pro and MacBook use USB-C. Rumors are that Apple may finally be waking up and will provide a larger capacity charger along with Lightning and USB-C connectors for future iPhone models according to The Verge. Apple has been shipping the same 5W cube charger with iPhones for years even though devices since the iPhone 8 have fast-charging capability. They might, however, ship with a faster 18W USB-C charger and a Lightning to USB-C cable. Let’s hope Apple doesn’t implement some sort of special chip in the circuitry that only allows Apple manufactured connections.
