macOS Loses Second Most Popular Operating System Spot

February 18, 2021

Perhaps Apple is losing some of its fan base. According to a post on Ars Technica, Chrome OS has now surpassed macOS as the second most popular desktop operating system. No surprise, but Windows is far more popular for desktops. The numbers don't mean that Google is smacking Apple down, rather that the Windows market share is slowly eroding. Mac market share grew from 6.7 percent in 2019 to 7.5 percent in 2020. The Chrome OS had a far bigger jump growing from 6.4 percent in 2019 to 10.8 percent in 2020. Windows fell from 85.4 percent in 2019 to 80.5 percent in 2020.

It appears as if Google is taking a page from Apple's playbook. Apple started life by concentrating on the schools and education. With the explosive growth of virtual schooling and remote work, Chromebooks sales expanded "within and outside of the education market." Perhaps we should get a Chromebook too so that we can be technical support for our grandchildren.
