More Headaches for Online Tax Filers

April 5, 2023

It’s that time of year again. The scramble to file our income tax return is upon us. Many users are taking advantage of electronically filing their returns, especially since the U.S. Post Office can’t seem to deliver mail reliably. According to a Dark Reading post, you should probably avoid using eFile.com unless you are fond of downloading malware. Apparently, the malware infested file named “popper.js” was being distributed from pretty much every page on the website for weeks. Not a good thing.

Filing your taxes is painful enough without waking away with “bonus” malware. It’s just another example of cybercriminals taking advantage of users during a stressful time. Zane Bond, head of product at Keeper Security said, “What should you do when you’re up against the deadline to get your taxes filed? Remain cautious and don’t make rushed clicks. If you are concerned about the security of any tax filing software you’re using, consider using a certified professional or the federal government’s e-file site to file your taxes.” Good advice.
