Multiple Screenshot Choices in Windows 10
July 28, 2020
The ability to take a screenshot has existed in Windows for many, many years. The original (and still existing) method is to just press the PrtScn key on the keyboard. The key may be labeled a little differently such as PrtScr or just PrtSc. Once you press the key, the screen(s) content is copied to the clipboard and can be pasted into some other application such as Paint, Photoshop, Word, GIMP, or some other software. Thanks to PCWorld for its post describing several alternatives to capture a screenshot.
You can combine the Windows key with PrtScrn to directly capture the screen to a file. Press both keys together and the screen will flash like a camera shutter opening and closing. Navigate to the Pictures -> Screenshot folder to see the screenshot file. Alt + PrtScr will take a screenshot of the current window in focus and not the whole monitor's screen. Another option is to use the Snipping Tool in Windows. Finally, there is a Snip & Sketch tool in Windows 10. Hit Windows + Shift + S and the screen will darken and pull up the Snip & Sketch interface, where you can choose a snip of the current selected window, a rectangular snip, a full screen snip or a freeform snip. "Once you've selected what you want, Snip & Sketch will copy it to the clipboard in the application and spawn a notification. Clicking on the notification will take you directly to Snip & Sketch. From there you can highlight, draw on, or deface the screenshot to your liking and save it to the format of your choice."
