No More Dessert Names for Android

August 26, 2019

You knew it was going to happen at some point. For years, Google has named the Android operating system after desserts. Each new version advancing the alphabet by one letter as the leading character. That's how we ended up with Android devices running names such as Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo and Pie. The challenge was to match the name with a numbered version of the operating system.

Google has changed direction and will refer to the operating system version by number going forward. The next version of the operating system will be known as Android 10. Perhaps Google couldn't come up with an acceptable dessert name starting with the letter Q? Even if Google got past Q, it probably would have stumbled hard at X. Numbered versions are better and give the user a good indicator as to how old their operating system is. Let's hope the number scheme gets more people to upgrade devices and no longer run non-supported vulnerable versions of Android,
