Stop Paying Router Rental Fees

December 21, 2020

Why is it that communications companies are so hated by consumers? It really doesn't matter if the hated company provides phone service, internet access or TV services. The purchasing public is tired of having to pay for crappy service and constantly increasing monthly fees. AT&T shot themselves in the foot with the DirecTV acquisition and some genius thought it was a good idea to cease promotional discounts and raise rates for customers. That strategy resulted in millions of lost subscribers.

Another foolish practice of internet service providers is forcing you to rent a cable modem or router in order to use its service. Some charge you a monthly fee even if you use your own equipment. As The Verge reports, that practice is now over. Cable companies can no longer charge you for a router you already own. Frontier is notorious for this practice, but I know Comcast has the same policy in some regions. If you are being charged rental for using your own equipment, contact your provider and point them to the recent change in the law.
