Trend Micro Users Beware – Scammers Using Stolen Data

November 7, 2019

We've all received or know of someone that got a phone call from "tech support" claiming that our computer is infected and sending alerts to the company. The call may claim to come from Microsoft, Symantec, Apple or any other well-known tech company. The Register reported that Trend Micro customers are the latest to be targeted.

Trend Micro said names, email addresses, ticket support numbers, and in some cases phone numbers, of around 68,000 customers were copied from an internal database by an employee and sold to scammers. The scammers could then use the information to make them sound more believable and increase the chance of success. "If a support call is to be made, it will be scheduled in advance," Trend Micro's spokesperson noted. "If you receive an unexpected phone call claiming to be from Trend Micro, hang up and report the incident to Trend Micro support."
