Will USB-C iPhones be Sold Worldwide?

November 2, 2022

The short answer is we really don’t know, but there are some strong indicators. It is no secret that the EU has been pushing for a standardized consumer electronics connections for about a decade. It is now in force and Apple will be forced to swap out its proprietary (and big profit) lightning connector for an industry standard USB-C connector before the end of 2024 according to a CNET post. The regulation only applies to the EU, but Apple may convert all iPhones instead of making two different versions. That means we may see a USB-C iphone in this country.

Apple has already been migrating to USB-C for some of its other products. The 2015 MacBook included a USB-C connection. Several iPad models (iPad Pro – 2018, iPad Air – 2020 and iPad Mini – 2021) had the Lightning connector replaced with USB-C. Even though the USB-C connection would simplify the number of chargers consumers would need, the biggest advantage is improved data transfer speeds.
