Windows 10 Registry Hacks

August 10, 2020

An operating system is a complex beast. Programmers spend a lot of time building various functions and features into the operating system and strive to protect users from themselves. The Windows registry is a database that controls a lot of the Windows operation, but not everyone is happy with restrictions Microsoft places on the user. Bleeping Computer has a post that details various registry hacks to change how Windows operates. As with any manual registry modifications, make sure you create a backup in case something goes awry. The instructions can help optimize your usage of Windows 10.

  • Disable Bing Search in Windows Search
  • Disable Windows 10 Lock Screen
  • Add 'Open command window here' to the File Explorer context menu
  • Display seconds on the taskbar clock
  • Enable Verbose mode in Windows 10

Disabling Bing works for me, but not sure why you would want to disable the lock screen. Locking the computer (especially after a period of inactivity) and requiring credentials to unlock sound like good security practice to me.
