Windows 11 Adding Native Support for Additional Compressed File Formats

May 25, 2023

According to a post on The Verge, Microsoft announced native support for some more compressed file formats. In a blog post, Windows chief Panos Panay stated, “We have added native support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-zip, rar, gz and many others using the libarchive open-source project. You now can get improved performance of archive functionality during compression on Windows.” This means you will no longer need a third-party product for support of common popular file archive formats. Expect the native support to be delivered to your Windows computer in the form of an update over the next several days.
