Your Glasses Can Reveal Secrets While on a Video Call

September 22, 2022

As if we don’t have enough to worry about, those of us who wear glasses may be revealing information we didn’t intend to expose. Bitdefender reported that the reflection in our glasses may show video call participants data that is displayed on our screens. Security researchers explored whether it is possible to determine what is displayed on your screen by analyzing the reflection in glasses while you are on a Zoom or Google Meet call. The short answer is yes.

Apparently, the quality of your webcam impacts how much data can be revealed. “The present-day 720p camera’s attack capability often maps to font sizes of 50-60 pixels with average laptops.” 4K cameras can reveal even more information. The researchers suggest using Zoom’s video filter feature “Background and Effects” to put cartoon sunglasses on your image. Not very professional looking, but it works.
